BECKING MOVES AHEAD AT THE START OF VOLCAT 201918-04-2019
The Dutch champion of the DMT Racing Team by Marconi defeats Ever Alejandro Gómez of the Olympia Factory Racing team in a final sprint that was thrilling to watch.
Yesterday saw the beginning of a new mountain bike adventure, with four intense days of riding in the Igualada area, putting all participants to the test.
The start list included major international names such as David Valero, Peeter Pruus, Mario Costa, Francesc Guerra, Titouan Perrin-Ganier, Ever Alejandro Gómez, Hans Becking, José Dias, Alexey Medvedev and more, who faced 39 kilometres with 800 metres of elevation gain.
Would they ride in groups or would there be attacks from the very start? The response was instantaneous. The current European champion, Alexey Medvedev, attacked from the early stages, breaking the race up, while a select group of seven riders pursued him with no time to breathe at all.
As they linked from path to path, the cyclists began to settle into the rhythm of the competition. The Russian Medvedev, looked strong until he suffered a mechanical mishap, losing all the time he had gained up to that point and making way for Becking, Ever and Pruus to lead the race.
The Dutchman tried to gain a bit of margin in the final kilometres of the stage, but Ever remained firm. They rode head to head until the final stretch, where Becking used all his blistering might to beat the Bolivian. The DMT Racing Team rider’s agonising triumph was followed by the Olympia Factory Team cyclist in second place and the Estonian Pruus (Torpado Südtirol) arriving just behind.
In the women's category, Italian champion Eva Lechner (Torpado Südtirol) set a very fast pace, which she didn’t ease up on at all. She was joined on the podium by Löiv (Hawaii Express) and Janine Schneider.
A frenetic day of riding leaves everything open for the next three stages. This edition of VolCAT promises plenty of attacks and tons of excitement.
