MEDVEDEV WINS AT THE LAST SECOND THE MOST DEMANDING STAGE OF VOLCAT 201920-04-2019

Each passing day is making its mark. The seemingly unending kilometres are straining legs. After two stages, it remained to be seen how a third, 63 km stage would be tackled. This was a crucial moment in the race, both for professional bikers and for the hundreds of amateur riders who give meaning and colour to the VolCAT. Speculation aside, it was a frenetic day once again on a course full of trails.
From the beginning, both Valero and Dias (DMT Racing Team by Marconi) began to push the pace to leap ahead of other riders. They wanted to reach the connected trails with an advantage and without trouble, which meant no time to stop for a breather.
A select group of cyclists stood firm. Becking (DMT Racing Team by Marconi), remained calm in the leading group. On the other hand, Pruus (Torpado SüdTirol) and Ever (Olympia Factory Racing) struggled to settle into the lead positions.
However, there was no time for compromise. In the final kilometres, the two members of the DMT Racing Team broke apart from the group with only Medvedev managing to keep behind them.
The trio led by Dias reached the final stretch with everything remaining to be determined. There, Medvedev (ASD CICLI TADDEI) impressed with his fresh legs and got the win. Dias had to settle for the second step on the podium, and the ever-calculating Becking came in third. Behind them followed another vibrant sprint, giving fourth place to Valero (MMR Factory Racing Team).
In the women's category, Lechner (Torpado Südtirol) didn’t intend to give in to her accumulated fatigue. She consistently managed to handle Loiv (Hawaii Express). She came in first on every trail, keeping an eye on her rival. The leader's jersey is a very precious trophy indeed. Over the final kilometres, feeling strong, she made her final push and took the stage victory, gaining a few seconds over the Estonian. Third place went to the Polish Ziolkowska (CST 7R MTB TEAM).
FINAL STAGE TO DECIDE THE GENERAL CLASSIFICATION
Becking managed to increase his margin over Pruss, but with a lead of just over a minute, the tiniest error could have huge implications. He’ll have to be on the lookout for Torpado Südtirol attacks. Meanwhile, the fight to reach the podium promises to be very exciting, with Dias, Casagrande (ASD Cicli Taddei), and Cominelli (Soudal Lee Cougan), separated by less than a minute. In the women’s category, Lechner will aim to confirm her power and obtain each and every victory. Will she be able to pull it off?
VolCAT 2019 will end tomorrow. The improved trails will leave their mark on all participants. The fast and technical course can be savoured by all who have given their most over these four days. After the race it will be time for the exciting Eliminator and to share experiences with friends about the four days of competition in Igualada.
In the other categories, VolCAT’s leaders are: Lucas Serrières (XC63) in the Sub-23, Sara Gay (Biking Point) in the women’s Sub-23, Tommaso Vanni (Cicli Taddei) in the Master 30, Pablo Egeda in the Master 40, Carlos Alberto Jesús in the Master 50, Silvia Scipioni in the women’s Master 30 and Eva Martín in the women’s Master 40. Meanwhile the Open category is in the hands of Sébastien Morvan and Olga Echenique.
