XCO starts this weekend with Banyoles ICC05-03-2015
The legendary MTB International Catalan Cup race of Banyoles Sunday will mark the official start of the XCO European season. The Catalan race, that takes place since 2002 holds the UCI C1 category and is one of the oldest and most prestigious races of the international calendar. The parc de la Draga in Banyoles will be the scene of the race which as every year highlights the participation of international cyclists.
Over 600 bikers from 15 nationalities will compete in the ICC Banyoles in a crucial year in which the best cyclists in the precious UCI points for the Olympic Games in Rio 2016 and the 2015 UCI Mountain Bike & Trials World Championships that will take place in Vallnord (Andorra) in September.
The path traced by the Club Cyclist Banyoles is very attractive and spectacular 7 kilometers with significant and steep slopes starting at Parc de la Draga and taking place through the Puig de Sant Martirià. A tour with constant changes of pace and short but significant slopes designed so that supporters can enjoy any time of the test.
Although José Antonio Hermida finally will not be able to take part of the race as he had to pull out of the Andalucía Bike Race, participation will truly remarkable counting with first class cyclists as Mantecón, Valero, Sarrou, Rodriguez, Guerra, Ventura or Koretzky. Catalan bikers, including Villar, Santanyes, Jordà and Pacios, will use the international competition to achieve UCI points.
The City Council of Banyoles keeps up his efforts at supporting the celebration of the mountain bike race and promoting the sport among youngsters. In this edition children between 6 and 14 years have the opportunity to participate in the Race Children of the Catalan Open Cup to be held on Saturday, March 7th from 15.30h.
The second round of the International Catalan Cup will be on 22nd March in Barcelona with the participation of double Olympic champion and current world champion cross-country, the french Julien Absalon. The calendar of the International Catalan Cup will be completed the races in the Vall de Lord, Collbató, the Vall de Boi and Corró d'Amunt.
